Jiwon Rhie & Megan Lee
Two Moons

presented in collaboration with Chinatown Soup

July 10 - July 30, 2021
291 Grand Street New York

We are excited to present in collobration with Chinatown Soup Two Moons by Megan Lee and Jiwon Rhie. Two Moons is a performative and process-based creative engagement that brings art to a street.

As Jiwon and Megan got to know each other during their time in-residence at Chinatown Soup, they discovered that they share complementary life experiences. Jiwon is Korean-born and moved to New York, while Megan, born in the USA, discovered her Korean heritage in New York. The artists illuminate each other’s understanding of self and place with Two Moons, a performative and process-based creative engagement that is on view at Home Gallery from July 10 - 30, 2021. The performance of interconnected hands extending towards each, set against the integrated screens, reflects the artists’ thought towards these intersections as they explore surreal sensibilities.

Megan Lee presents her sculptural landscape paintings on-site gallery space, while Jiwon Rhie will show a participatory performance piece on the opening day and on Saturday July 17. The performance documentation will be accessible through QR code on the gallery window during the show period.

Jiwon Rhie is a Korean multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn. Her work deals with diverse subject matter exploring ideas of boundaries, human relationships, identity, and communication. Rhie has been selected in Bronx Museum 2021 AIM Fellowship, and her works have been exhibited in various group shows, including 12th Annual - Portal: Governors Island (Governors Island, NY), Real World (Tropical Contemporary, OR), PASSION. ABOUT CHINATOWN SOUP

Inspired by the success of Detroit Soup, a nonprofit startup established in 2010 by two young women to benefit local artist initiatives through micro-funding dinners, Chinatown Soup built upon this interactive, democratic model to design an art space for a neighborhood that has shifted from an immigrant populated enclave to a hotbed for real estate development and the new art scene.

Drawing from the Stone Soup folk parable and artist-run collectives of 1970’s New York, such as Chinatown’s Basement Workshop and SoHo’s FOOD, we’re forming a new vanguard of social entrepreneurs that re-imagine how people can work together to live creatively in the 21st century city. This intervention begins by enabling cultural organizations to provide emerging artists with their first significant exposure, offer studio space, activate maker marketplaces, and present public programming with strong commitments to local communities.
